Reality Design Lab (https://reality.design) is seeking a Reality Designer to collaborate on creating technical artwork for mixed reality using Unity. You will co-author our art and research work, which will be published in top international conferences in the field.

We often refer to all collaborators as "Reality Designers" for simplicity. | • Possesses skills similar to a Technical Artist in the Game Industry • Performs tasks akin to a Creative Technologist in the New Media Art Industry • Thinks like a Research Assistant in Interaction Design Research | | Contract | Project Based Contractor. | We consider collaboration as full-time if you have successfully worked with us, such as exhibiting artwork or publishing a paper. | | Term | This is a long-term open position.
You should be available from now until May 31, 2024. | Act as soon as possible (ASAP), as the deadline for SIGGRAPH Asia is approaching on June 20. | | Compensation | Project Based. | The reference hourly rate is no less than $20 per hour. However, compensation is not calculated on an hourly basis. It is determined on a project basis, involving negotiations per project. | | Credit | As a co-author of the papers you are working on, with clear credit descriptions. | We plan to publish papers and present at top international conferences in the field. Reality Design Lab (https://reality.design) is an interdisciplinary research and design lab that examines the intersection of speculative design, spatial computing, and programmable cryptography. Led by researcher and designer Botao Amber Hu (https://botao.hu), the lab prioritizes developing inter-bodily embodied interactions within co-located mixed reality. It also explores the use of blockchain as a substrate for artificial life.
Art + Paper: Our working philosophy is centered on the creation of inspiring artwork or tools that generate art as our primary research outputs. We then document our methodology through academic papers, which we publish and showcase at conferences and venues such as CHI, CHI PLAY, SIGGRAPH, UbiComp, UIST, DIS, and ALIFE.
'Arduino' of MR: The lab is also the inventor and primary maintainer of HoloKit, an open-source mixed reality headset and software toolkit (similar to the 'Arduino' community for Mixed Reality). This is aimed at making mixed reality design education more accessible.In line with this objective, Botao Amber Hu, with the support of the Reality Design Lab, serves as a guest lecturer at the China Academy of Art, teaching "Mixed Reality Design".
